Since opening in 2005, Kru has become an industry favorite in Sacramento and continues to win Favorite Sushi restaurant from various regional publications. In March 2015, Kru was written about in the Wall Street Journal in an article named “6 Great Cities for Food Lovers”, making people outside of Sacramento and California take notice. Kru is owned and operated by Peter Kwong and Buu (Billy) Ngo. Billy is an accomplished chef with honors and awards including his “Best of Show” win in the 2007 Sacramento Region Sushi Masters competition and Best Chef from Sacramento Magazine.

Kru came to NDC Grow America Fund for financing to improve profitability by moving to a larger location and expanding its product offerings to include a full bar and bottle shop. Kru previously operated out of a 1,800 square foot street side location on J Street in Sacramento, CA.  Its volume coupled with its size had resulted in issues that could not have been overcome by renovations or any operational changes, that wouldn’t compromise the brand.

NDC Grow America Fund provided Kru a SBA Loan to support the move into their new location as well as leasehold improvements. Kru anticipates adding approximately 27 additional employees and hopes to increase the hours for existing employees.
