The City of Columbia, SC’s Work Initiative Program (WIP) won an NDC Academy 2009 Award in the Job Creation category.  A full-time construction training program, WIP participants attended 12 weeks of full-time training in construction trades and core job search skills, and earned a stipend for their participation.  WIP has impacted over 475 individuals, and resulted in 180 program graduates who have gone on to full-time employment, to obtain their GEDs and attend college.  The City not only increased the pool of job-ready employees for Columbia’s employers, but has been able to complete some of its own neighborhood and Habitat for Humanity projects by using them as training opportunities for WIP participants.  NDC is pleased to provide a forum for you to display your work on Capitol Hill and to share your hard-earned knowledge with your colleagues at the NDC Academy 2011.  We were delighted with the response to our call for submissions and now have the difficult task of narrowing the field to six projects in each of four categories.
