NDC was pleased to welcome over 270 attendees to the NDC Academy 2009 held May 12-14 in Washington, D.C. This year’s event kicked off with opening remarks by Adolfo Carrión, Jr., Director of the White House Office of Urban Affairs and a Meet the New Administration session with representatives from the U.S. Department of HUD, the House Financial Services Subcommittee and the Senate Committee on Small Business and Entrepreneurship, among others. Attendees from a broad spectrum of community development corporations and Federal, state and local government agencies shared their challenges and successes with one another and the program and policy experts who participated in panel and classroom discussions.
New to this year’s event were the first-ever Project Showcases from the Field, where practitioners from across the country had the opportunity to submit their innovative community development projects. Finalist projects were displayed at the Capitol Hill Reception sponsored by Senator Charles Schumer and Congresswoman Carolyn Maloney on Tuesday, May 12, and winners were selected by a vote of all Academy participants, following visual and spoken presentations. Awards were presented at the NDC Academy 2009 Awards Luncheon. View the complete list of finalist projects and learn more about the dedicated professionals who made them happen.
